Do I need a referral for psychological services?

A referral is not required to have a psychoeducational or psychological assessment. However, some private insurance companies may require one for reimbursement. You are encouraged to contact your insurance provider.

Do you offer virtual assessments?

Intake and feedback sessions take place virtually through Jane App, which complies with relevant privacy legislation, including PHIPA and PIPEDA. In-person appointments are required for all other aspects of the assessment process.

How long does an assessment usually take?

Gifted testing involves an intake and a feedback session, each lasting 30 minutes, in addition to 2 hours dedicated to in-person testing.

Psychoeducational assessments entail an hour for each intake and feedback session, and approximately 6 hours for in-person testing, divided over two to three sessions.

Adult ADHD assessments consists of intake and feedback sessions, each lasting 1 hour, alongside 3 hours of in-person testing and a clinical interview.

How soon can I expect the results?

Verbal feedback and a written report for gifted testing are provided within five business days. Adult ADHD and psychoeducational assessment reports are provided within six weeks after receipt of all relevant documentation, such as report cards, previous assessment reports, and questionnaires, as applicable.

What does gifted testing involve, and how can I prepare my child?

Gifted testing involves administration of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fifth Edition (WISC-V) or the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV). School boards can have differing gifted testing requirements. While most only require intelligence testing, some might also ask for an evaluation of academic achievement. Academic achievement testing can be provided at an additional cost. Caregivers are encouraged to contact their local school boards to find out what specific testing is needed. It is important to note that the school board retains ultimate authority regarding identification and placement.

In preparation for testing, ensure your child has a restful sleep and feels calm on the day of their appointment. It is best not to mention to your child that they are undergoing gifted testing. Instead, share with them that we are going to explore how they learn. Only about 2% of children qualify as gifted, and we want to keep their spirits high. Please note that attempts to “study” for gifted testing should be avoided, as this can invalidate the results and require alternative testing at an additional cost.

Are services by a psychologist covered by OHIP?

OHIP does not cover services provided by a psychologist. Private, extended health care plans often reimburse a portion of the cost of psychological services. Prior to scheduling the assessment, you are encouraged to contact your insurance provider to determine what psychological services are covered, the amount of coverage available per hour and per calendar year, and whether a referral from a family physician is required for assessment services to be eligible for coverage.

Do you directly bill to extended health insurance?

We do not bill insurance companies directly. After you pay for the service, a receipt will be provided to you. If you have extended health coverage, you can submit the receipt to your insurance company for reimbursement. Any expenses not covered by your insurer may qualify for a tax deduction as a medical expense on your income tax return. Consulting your accountant is advisable to explore eligible tax deductions.

What information is included on receipts for psychological services?

Receipts include the psychologist’s name, professional designation, degree, and license number. They also contain the dates of service and the names of assessment participants during each appointment. Only the names of the individuals who attended each appointment can be included on the receipt. The service dates cannot be changed to align with reimbursement deadlines. Once you have submitted the receipts to your insurance provider, we cannot change the names on your receipt. Please verify all information is accurate before submitting.

When is payment required, and what payment methods are accepted?

A $250 deposit is required to secure your assessment. Following your deposit, which will be applied towards the assessment fee, payment is required on the day of each appointment, prior to the scheduled appointment time. Through our scheduling and billing system, Jane App, you can securely upload your credit card, Mastercard Debit, or Visa Debit card number for payment. E-transfer is also accepted; however, a valid credit card is required on file in case of late payment, late cancellation, or missed appointments. Once you provide your payment method, it will be securely retained in our system to aid in processing payments appropriately.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule my appointment?

We require 48 hours notice for changes to your appointment. Requests to cancel or reschedule appointments can be made in the client portal or via email: hello@monumepsychology.ca. Cancellation or rescheduling requests received with less than 48 hours notice, as well as missed appointments, will incur a full charge for the scheduled session time ($250/hour).

Cancelling the assessment before the intake session, without 48 hours notice will result in the forfeiture of your $250 deposit.

Please note, assessments fees for services rendered are nonrefundable.
